Top 5 Night time photography tips

1) Use a torch

When taking an image at night it will be hard to focus so take a torch with you. Whilst shinning the light on the screen focus your image with auto focus and once the focus is locked turn it to manual focus so when you press the shutter it doesnt re-focus casuing your image to be blurred.

2) Use a high ISO

When taking night time images it is important to use your highest possible ISO this is because there will not be a lot of light around. By using a high ISO your shutter will stay open longer allowing more light to get into the image. By using a higher ISO to let more light in it will compensate for the amount of light you would have recieved during the day, so to get a good photo at night you need to have a high ISO.

3) Use a tripod

When taking photos at night it is vital you use a tripod because of the long shutter speeds. Without using a tripod you would see a lot of camera shake in your image reducing the quality of the picture. As the shutter is open for a long time there is a lot of time for camera shake to affect the image. So use a tripod to reduce camera shake improving the quality of your image.

4) Consider shooting without a flash

Try switching between different flash settings when taking yours images. If the subject is close to the camera it may benefit from having the flash on whereas those with a subject further in the distance may not require a flash. Also when there is some sort of lighting in the image this either being a moon or street lights try taking the photo without flash to see what results you get.

5) Shoot at different angles

Get creative with your photos and try shooting from different angles from the standered horizontal and vertical. Try taking ariel shoots from bridges or buildings, try shooting upwards, find clean spot and lay down then look at the top of a building with clouds around it perhaps? Anything that gives your image something different from any other photo is good, just experiment!
