1. Who is in charge of organising/managing disposals of redundant IT equipment within
the council? Is there a person specifically dedicated to this?

The responsibility of disposing of our IT equipment falls to the IT Services Administration
Office. There is no single person or role dedicated to IT equipment disposal. The School
does have a central Environmental & Sustainability Coordinator who provides a central
point for coordination.

2. Do you currently have a recycling solution in place? If so, which company handles
this on your behalf?
The School currently has an agreement with Oden Services UK. They are our sole
disposal agent for IT equipment (WEEE).

3. What volume of IT equipment do you dispose of annually?
The School sent a total of 906 pieces of IT equipment for recycling in 2007, of which 789
were desktop PCs. We anticipate that the figures for 2008 will be broadly similar.

4. Do you have an annual budget for this service – do you expect to be charged for IT
disposal services?
We have a small annual budget for IT equipment disposal. Due to our three year
replacement cycle much of our equipment has some residential value and we therefore
either break even or can meet disposal costs from within the budget.

5. When is your existing contract up for renewal? I am interested in establishing whether
the University deems it important enough to contract/tender, or to proceed by
employing services based on best price at that time…my investigations into this area
so far suggest that best price does not always equal best solution. I'd be interested in
your thoughts.
The School is taking the sustainability agenda very seriously and when the current disposal
contract is due for renewal we will be seeking a solution not wholly based upon cost. I
anticipate that the group that draws up the tender specification will double weight the
sustainable disposal criteria. This is a similar strategy we have taken with IT equipment
procurement. We will also investigate at this time disposal solutions offered by our IT
equipment vendors to identify if they are able to offer a solution that will enable us to reduce
our environmental impact.
